Why Beauty Is An Advantage For Solar Panels
In our January blog post, we highlighted a recent MIT study on the aesthetics of solar panels. Appearance is a key factor in most consumer products but has not been prioritized as much in the solar industry. The results of the study showed that consumers care as much about the look of panels as they do performance, and in some cases, were even willing to sacrifice performance for a better-looking panel. The study also concluded that all-black panels were the most desirable because of their clean lines and visual integration into the roof. Luckily, at Solaria, appearance is as important to us as performance. For homeowners, this means a solar system that looks beautiful on your roof and provides you with reliable, long-lasting power.

Solaria’s Shingled Technology
If you compare a PowerXT® panel and a conventional panel side-by-side, the difference is immediate. PowerXT® panels are entirely black, whereas conventional panels have a white, grid-like pattern on the surface of the panel. The reason why we’ve been able to achieve an all-black look is because of our shingling technology. Solaria’s patented technology cuts solar cells in to 5 equal strips. The strips are aligned with a very slight overlap, like the shingles on your roof, and attached using an electrically conductive adhesive. By shingling, the visible circuitry of the panel is hidden under the overlapped cells and it also eliminates the need for bus bars and series wiring. What results is a sleek, Pure Black design unlike anything else on the market.
Beauty & Performance
In addition to beauty, shingling also creates a more powerful and efficient panel. In conventional panels, the white, grid-like pattern is entirely inactive, meaning it produces zero power. It also takes up over 10% of the surface of the panel, detracting from the panel’s appearance and performance. Through shingling, PowerXT® devotes the entire front surface to generating power, resulting in a more powerful and 20% more efficient panel. The increase in power and efficiency means you will likely need less panels on your roof, reducing clutter and saving you money.
